The Studio Subwoofer Concept
A deep bass extension in all of the speakers in a surround system causes phase problems and complicates speaker setup. The solution is to have excellent main speakers with the lowest octave extension provided by front subwoofers. Single or multiple front subwoofers supplement bass extension for the main speakers, thereby making them full range. Separate subwoofers also makes room set up more flexible and reduces the size and weight of the main speakers.
For phonographic recording, the subwoofer channel can be used as a ceiling channel driving a 6th identical speaker installed above the head of the listener.
Separate Speakers and Amplifiers
Lipinski's laboratory tests indicate that when an amplifier is built into a speaker, second harmonic distortions can rise to 15%! This was also confirmed in blind listening tests.
Short Speaker Cables
Lipinski's extensive experiments with top rated speaker cables clearly indicate that a quality, short length cable elicits better sonics than a longer cable of higher quality. Line level cable length is not as destructive to sound quality as the length of the speaker cable.
Speaker Stands
Stands should positions the tweeters at the ear level of a listener in a seated position.
Mono Block Amplifiers
How can you place the amplifier close to the speaker, without attaching it to the enclosure? Lipinski recommends a mono block amplifier placed on the floor next to the speaker stand. Or better yet, inside the speaker stand.
Subwoofer Amplifiers
Subwoofer amplifiers should be designed with a completely different approach than main speaker amps.
Surround Monitoring Console
The console should have the cleanest possible signal path and should have some features that are not available on today’s market.
